Glutamine

Overview

Glutamine is an amino acid in food protein. The body also makes it, and systemic pools supply the gut. Under physiological stress it can become conditionally indispensable. This page keeps that amino acid separate from glutamine powder used as a supplement.

Glutamine is an enterocyte fuel and a substrate for epithelial proliferation, repair, and tight-junction proteins [1]. Across adult trials, glutamine supplementation did not improve gut permeability overall [2]. A separate trial in postinfectious irritable bowel syndrome reported a selected supplementation response [3]. That result stays in that condition. It does not make dietary protein, or extra glutamine, a general requirement for barrier integrity [2,3].

Dietary Origin

Foods supply glutamine inside protein. Endogenous synthesis and circulating glutamine also supply the intestine, so a food that contains protein is not evidence that the meal raised barrier proteins [1]. The permeability trials and the postinfectious IBS trial gave glutamine as a supplement [2,3]. No food page here has a verified glutamine amount, so none is linked.

Gut-Brain Axis & Enteric Nervous System (BRS5)Glutamine is an enterocyte substrate in gut-barrier tight-junction integrity. Adult supplementation shows no overall permeability benefit. A postinfectious IBS response does not establish general need.[1,2,3]
