Fructo-oligosaccharides / galacto-oligosaccharides

Overview

This page is the combined fructo-oligosaccharide and galacto-oligosaccharide preparation used in one human fermentation study. It is not a licence to treat every FOS, every GOS, and oligofructose as the same substance. Oligofructose is a defined short-chain inulin-type mixture. Sucrose-derived fructooligosaccharides are another preparation. Galacto-oligosaccharides are built from galactose, not fructose.

In people, that combined oligosaccharide preparation was fermented in the intestine and supplied carbohydrate for microbial short-chain fatty acid formation [1]. The fate of those acids was measured for the administered mixture. The result is not attributed to fructo-oligosaccharides alone or to galacto-oligosaccharides alone, and it is not ordinary-food equivalence [1].

Dietary Origin

The exposure is the administered combination [1]. A food that contains some fructan, or a supplement labelled only FOS or only GOS, is not identified as this mixture. Oligofructose from chicory inulin hydrolysate is a different material and has its own page. No food page is linked.

Supported upstream supplyThe tested FOS/GOS preparation supplies microbial fermentation substrates upstream of epithelial barrier biology.
Limitation: Controlled human FOS/GOS fermentation does not establish the effects of inulin alone, individual FOS or GOS, ordinary food portions, or human tight-junction improvement.
